What is Light Therapy?
Light therapy is a cascade of beneficial biological reactions throughout damaged nerve cells that stimulate healing.
The health benefits that occur as a result of light therapy can be directly attributed to increased blood flow which improves tissue oxygenation.
Light therapy uses red, blue, and near infrared light to dramatically increase circulation to injury sites and areas of chronic pain. This results in a rapid relief of discomfort, improvement in sensation, and regeneration of damaged tissues and nerves.
The key to this dramatic improvement in blood flow is Nitric Oxide, a short-lived gas that is crucial to the health of arteries. Nitric Oxide relaxes the arteries, helps regulate blood pressure, fights free radicals and discourages platelets from clumping together in the blood vessels.
This process results in:
-
Increased blood circulation
-
Reduced pain
-
Decreased inflammation
-
A triggering of nitric oxide release
-
Accelerated natural healing processes
-
Rejuvenated body tissues
"What light therapy can do is activate pathways that would stop cells from dying, which is also useful when you've got something like COVID-19 destroying cells all over the body."

Near infrared light therapy can be used for Traumatic Brain Injury (including concussions) sustained in events such as automobile collisions, sporting event collisions, and combat trauma.
The Science Behind Light Therapy
What is light therapy?
Low-level light therapy (LLLT) stimulates the process called photobiomodulation (PBM). In scientific studies, PBM has been shown to trigger the release of nitric oxide (NO). NO causes local vasodilation which brings about an increase in local circulation, bringing increased oxygen and glucose to tissue. The release of NO by the mitochondria unlocks the aerobic metabolism of the mitochondria, allowing them to produce Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP). ATP is the major energy currency of the cell.
What is the difference between red, blue and near-infrared (NIR) light?
Each wavelength penetrates to a different level of tissue. Inlight Medical’s pads include two to three wavelengths on each pad with respective penetration depths as follows: Blue & Near-Infrared (NIR) Light: Increases circulation and reduces pain. Blue (465nm) penetrates—3mm. NIR (850nm) which then penetrates—100mm. This provides a superficial and deep light wavelength penetration.
Red & Near-Infrared (NIR) Light: Increases circulation and reduces pain. Red (629nm) penetrates—10mm. NIR (850nm) penetrates—100mm. This provides a mid and deep light wavelength penetration.
Various combinations of these three lights create the InLight Medical low-level Polychromatic Light Therapy system. Research has shown it’s beneficial to utilize the power of multiple wavelengths (polychromatic) of light to stimulate the body with photobiomodulation and warmth.
What is “polychromatic” light therapy?
Polychromatic light therapy is the simultaneous use of more than one light wavelength, or color. InLight Medical Systems™ use two or more light wavelengths in every pad.
What is Progressive Multi-Pulse TM Technology and how is it different from other systems?
In Light Therapy systems are engineered to automatically pulse light through seven different frequencies (Hz) during each 20-minute session when placed on setting A, B, or C to provide photons to the body in a variety of cycles.
Why are some of the lights on the pads dark?
The “dark” rows on In Light Therapy devices are the rows of near-infrared diodes. Near-infrared wavelengths are just outside of the human visible color spectrum. In Light Therapy has included a near infrared spectrum emission tester on the top of the 6/Port controller. By placing a near infrared LED above the circular testing dot to the right of the LCD screen of the 6/Port, the tester will provide feedback by means of illuminating a green LED on the back of the controller if it senses near infrared light. Some new digital cameras may also pick up near infrared wavelengths and display them as lighted.
What has light therapy been shown to do?
Increase Circulation: Circulation is increased by the release of nitric oxide which causes both local vasodilatation and the formation of new capillaries. Increased circulation may result in carrying more oxygen and glucose to the tissue.
Reduce Pain: LLLT has been shown in scientific studies to release nitric oxide causing local vasodilation which improves the oxygenation of ischemic tissue to reduce pain. It also triggers the nucleus of the cell in a process called photobiomodulation, to manufacture various natural, cellular substances, including anti-inflammatories, which may also reduce pain.
Stimulate the Production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP): ATP is the major energy currency in all cells which enables them to function. ATP provides the chemical energy that supports most chemical reactions within the cell. The release of NO (an inhibitor in the cell) by LLLT unlocks the aerobic metabolism of our mitochondria allowing them to produce more ATP which allows the cell to function more freely without the NO inhibition to mitochondria.
Why are there only three wavelengths used?
While the sun’s light is “full spectrum” and essential for life, the bulk of current medical research is focused on the wide range of wavelengths within the red, blue and infrared spectrums.
