Have you ever experienced nerve pain? Let’s talk about Neuropathy.

One of the most common ailments we experience as we begin to age is the wear and tear on joints & nerves after all that we’ve done in our lives. With nerve damage, many people who experience this don’t realize that this is what the medical community calls neuropathy.

Specifically, “Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area. Neuropathy frequently start in your hands or feet, but other parts of your body can be affected too.” (Article 1.)

This just means that your body's peripheral nervous system (aka the stuff that sends signals to your brain to communicate how your body is doing) isn’t functioning in the way that is needed.

Is this something that keeps you up at night when you should be dreaming? Is this something that keeps you from celebrating with your loved ones?

Well, I want to share something with you. Light Therapy can help with many things (you already know this!) but it has some truly powerful healing when it comes to neuropathy.

When your body is overworked and your nervous system goes into overdrive, your body responds by activating enzymes in your body which can actually trigger problems when in excess. These enzymes can actually break down those important nerve tissues resulting in neuropathy and continued pain.

This can lead to:

  • Swelling & itching skin

  • Muscle twitching

  • Numbness in skin & limbs

  • Loss of balance

  • Poor circulation

  • Weakness in parts of the body

  • Burning, throbbing or stabbing pain.

Is Neuropathy common?

Neuropathy is actually something that is very common, especially within the American culture. It is estimated that 25% - 30% of people in America will be affected by it. This is especially common in those over the age of 65.

Among other commonly cited statistics, neuropathy is present in (Referenced from Cleveland Clinic):

What causes Neuropathy?

  • Diabetes

  • Trauma

  • Inherited Disorders

  • Autoimmune Disorders and Infections

  • Abnormal vitamin levels

  • Alcoholism

How does light therapy help with Neuropathy?

Here are two core things that happen during a Low-Level Light Therapy session that help with Neuropathy:

  1. When your body absorbs red/near-infrared light energy, it simulates a photochemical reaction within your mitochondria that increases ATP production and cell signaling. Basically it gives your body the energy it needs to regulate itself and focus its efforts on healing and repairing the damage that occurs by your body fighting itself. Red llight therapy is a regenerative medicine treatment that uses different types of light to stimulate new growth of nerves and tissue and help relieve pain.

  2. It reduces inflammation within your body, allowing it to clear out toxins, remove built-up cellular waste, and infection to allow for your body to naturally circulate as it needs to. It also supports healthy blood flow to areas of your body, like your immune system and skin, to remove waste and to stimulate healing, increase tissue oxygenation, and increase antioxidants.

  3. “The red light could stimulate mitochondria in your cells, which produce energy for your cells. Studies have found that RLT could stimulate the re-growth of blood vessels, so those treated with RLT get more blood and oxygen, further promoting healing. Another study found that RLT may improve peripheral nerve regeneration, as well as improve function, decrease pain, and increase sensation in treated areas.” (Article 3.)

What does the science say?

“Red light therapy can help with Neuropathy pain as it stimulates healing and can promote new nerves to grow, restoring normal sensation and reducing pain.” (Article 3.)

“Red to near-infrared LEDs have been shown to promote mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. In this study, LED irradiation improved nerve regeneration and increased antioxidation levels in the chamber fluid. Therefore, we propose that antioxidation induced by LEDs may be conducive to nerve regeneration.” (Article 2.)

If you’re experiencing any pain that you think is linked to Neuropathy then I would love to help you reduce the pain that you’re experiencing.
